Who we are
A home for veterans on College Road
Post 400 is part of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, founded to serve veterans of America's overseas conflicts. Our home is at 540 College Road in Farmingville, across from the Suffolk County Community College Selden campus. We belong to District 11 of the VFW Department of New York.
Our members served in wars, campaigns and expeditions overseas. At home we keep doing what we took an oath to do: look after each other, honor the fallen, and serve the town around us.
In memory
Sgt. Santora and SSgt. Bonacasa
VFW National lists Post 400 as the Sgt. Santora and SSgt. Bonacasa Memorial Post, in honor of two local servicemen killed in Afghanistan.
Sgt. Jason Anthony Santora
U.S. Army Ranger with the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. A 2003 graduate of Sachem High School, he was on his fourth deployment when he was killed in action in Logar Province, Afghanistan, on April 23, 2010. He was 25.
SSgt. Louis M. Bonacasa
U.S. Air Force, New York Air National Guard, serving with the 106th Rescue Wing and later the 105th Airlift Wing. A 2002 graduate of Newfield High School, he was killed by a suicide bomber near Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, on December 21, 2015. He was 31. The Long Island Expressway bridge on Yaphank Avenue carries his name.
Our mission
Why the VFW exists
The VFW's national mission is to foster camaraderie among United States veterans of overseas conflicts, to serve our veterans, the military and our communities, and to advocate on behalf of all veterans.
At Post 400 that looks like funeral honors for fallen comrades, scholarships for local students, ceremonies on Memorial Day and Veterans Day, and a hall that is open to the neighbors who support us.
Leadership
Post Commander
Frank Sanzone, U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant (Retired), leads Post 400 as Commander. He was honored as a 2024 Suffolk County Veteran of the Year.

In the community
Community service
Student veterans
In 2016 the Town of Brookhaven built a sidewalk and crosswalk linking the Post to the college, and the Post opened its lot as overflow parking for student veterans.
A rebuilt home
In 2017 volunteers from Turner Construction renovated the building: roof, siding, air conditioning, lighting, flagpole, sign, sprinklers, steps and walkways.
Scholarships
In 2025 and 2026 the Post funded two $500 scholarships each year for Sachem East seniors, together with the Farmingville Hills Chamber of Commerce.
Post 400 has been a member of the Farmingville Hills Chamber of Commerce since March 11, 2011.
